  • New Sustainable Product: Holland America Line has launched a new retail item: souvenir coasters made from upcycled carpet used on its ships.
  • Industry First: This is the first recycled carpet product to be sold in the cruise industry, created in partnership with manufacturer Dansk Wilton.
  • The Process: The first batch of 12,000 coasters was made from 3,300 pounds of carpet waste collected from three specific ships.
  • Future Plans: This project is part of a broader sustainability initiative with future plans to create other upcycled products like notebooks and artwork.

Holland America Line is introducing a wonderfully creative and sustainable way for guests to remember their voyage. In an innovative new initiative, the cruise line is giving its used shipboard carpet a second life as beautiful souvenir coasters. This pioneering project, a first for the cruise industry, is a tangible and meaningful symbol of the brand’s deep commitment to recycling and the principles of a circular economy.

Developed in a thoughtful partnership with Danish carpet manufacturer Dansk Wilton, this initiative transforms waste into a special and functional product that guests can take home. So far, 3,300 pounds of carpet waste retrieved from ships like the Oosterdam, Eurodam, and Nieuw Amsterdam during recent drydocks have been skillfully upcycled into 12,000 coasters. This is just the beginning of a larger sustainability program called Re:Shape. The cruise line has exciting future plans to create other unique items from the carpet waste, including notebooks, artwork, and even door signs.

This project beautifully showcases how resources can be thoughtfully repurposed, reducing waste while creating something new and valuable. Guests will have the delightful opportunity to purchase these unique keepsakes in the onboard shops across the fleet by the end of October 2025, allowing them to own a genuine piece of their ship’s history while supporting a great eco-friendly cause.
